Site assessment and surface grading
A review of surface levels and the areas where water collects.
BUILD · IMPROVELandscape grading and surface drainage improvements in St. Albert for low spots, uneven ground and water movement through the yard.
Low spots and slopes toward a building deserve attention before surface finishes go in. We assess the site and quote a practical grading scope for the property.
The property assessment brings the areas, materials and access together into a clear proposal.
A review of surface levels and the areas where water collects.
Soil shaping and levelling around the agreed landscape work.
A plan for joining the corrected area to lawn, beds and hard surfaces.
Photos taken while water is collecting help explain a problem that may disappear on a dry day. Identify when it occurs and which areas are affected. We review the surface conditions and what a practical landscape correction would involve.
If you are replacing sod or building an outdoor space, discuss drainage first. Reviewing the proposed grades before the visible finishes go in helps coordinate the work and gives you a clearer picture of the whole project scope.
A grading project begins by observing where water collects, where it enters the lot and where it is meant to leave. Low turf, a reverse slope beside the foundation, buried downspout outlets and blocked side-yard swales call for different solutions. A site walk during or soon after rain can be especially useful. The goal is to understand the whole drainage path before moving soil, because raising one area can push water into another problem area or across a neighbour’s property.
The City of St. Albert says homeowners must maintain positive drainage away from foundations and protect the original grade of grass swales when landscaping. On a newer property, the approved lot grading plan and existing surface features matter. Work near a foundation, side-yard swale, patio or fence may need coordination rather than a simple load of topsoil. A quote should explain the area to be regraded, how the proposed surface ties into neighbouring grades and what landscape finishes will be restored.
Grading may finish with sod, seed, rock, a garden bed or a hardscape edge. Those choices affect finished elevations and how the surface carries water. Downspouts, window wells, steps and existing concrete also need attention. We discuss whether the work is a surface correction or whether a larger drainage investigation is needed. A visually level lawn is not necessarily a properly draining lawn; the important test is where water can travel once snow melts or a heavy rain arrives.
Grading work depends on the area, existing elevations, access, material movement and restoration. Some enquiries also need survey information or further specialist assessment. We distinguish the landscape work we can quote from any separate investigation, then identify the intended finish rather than leaving the property restoration unclear.
Pricing is quoted for the property. Size, site conditions, access, materials and the agreed work affect the total. Scope or material changes may change the price; the quote confirms inclusions, disposal and applicable GST before work begins.

Surface grading differs from foundation or buried-drainage problems. Specialist investigation may be needed beyond the landscape corrections being assessed.
Yes. Tell us about pooling or an unsuitable grade before the lawn finish is installed, so preparation can be considered within the project.
Yes. Share photographs of the complete side yard and access. A focused correction can be reviewed without assuming a whole-yard renovation.
