Mulch and decorative rock installation in St. Albert, from a bed top-up to material replacement with preparation and edging included in the scope.
Mulch and decorative rock can define edges, cover bare soil and tie planting areas together. Material choice and preparation matter as much as the colour.
The property assessment brings the areas, materials and access together into a clear proposal.
Existing bed condition and edges addressed before covering the surface.
Mulch selected and placed around the agreed planting areas.
Decorative rock installed with the preparation and transitions identified.
A top-up can suit a bed whose shape and underlying preparation already work. Show us the current material, weeds and thin areas so we can distinguish a straightforward refresh from a bed that needs more attention.
Switching between mulch and rock may involve removal and rebuilding rather than simply placing a new layer. Discuss appearance, nearby plants and the way leaves or debris collect in the area before settling on a finish.
Mulch and rock create very different growing conditions and maintenance patterns. Organic mulch suits many planting beds because it covers soil and can be topped up as it breaks down. Decorative stone offers a crisp, durable look but can collect leaves and make future planting changes more labour intensive. Light and dark materials also look different beside brick, siding, paving and plants. We compare those tradeoffs with the customer before quoting a material simply because it appears attractive in a sample.
Placing new material over weeds, turf or uneven soil rarely gives the clean result people expect. The scope may include removing existing cover, reshaping the edge, correcting low spots and deciding whether fabric is appropriate for the particular application. Fabric does not remove the need for future maintenance, and soil or debris can accumulate above it. A consistent finished depth and tidy transitions around shrubs, utilities and hard surfaces make the work feel deliberate.
University of Minnesota Extension recommends organic mulch around newly planted trees and shrubs while keeping it away from the trunk and allowing water to reach the root zone. Beds need enough space for plants to grow and for a person to weed or prune them later. We discuss how the area will be watered, whether downspouts cross it and where snow is piled in winter. The quote identifies the material, approximate coverage, preparation and disposal so a refresh is not confused with a full bed reconstruction.
Material volume, delivery access, removal, edging, preparation and installation labour shape the price. Samples and colour preferences help, but the quote should also identify how the existing bed will be prepared. We discuss disposal and any related planting or curbing so the finished edge is considered from the start.
Pricing is quoted for the property. Size, site conditions, access, materials and the agreed work affect the total. Scope or material changes may change the price; the quote confirms inclusions, disposal and applicable GST before work begins.

A mulch top-up and a change to decorative rock need different preparation. Existing material, bed edges and retained plants affect the work.
Rock can collect leaves; organic mulch changes over time and may need replenishing. Neither eliminates future weeding.
Share clear photographs or a known product name. We review available material options; an exact match to weathered or discontinued material should not be assumed.
Preparation and any fabric are specified for the agreed application. Fabric is not an automatic solution for every planted bed.
